Texas Uber Driver

Uber and Lyft Accident Statistics

Uber and Lyft are Austin’s most popular ride-sharing apps, but the rise of traffic deaths has increased up to 3% due to ride-sharing services in the US since 2011. That’s as many as 1,100 fatalities a year.

This increase in accidents has been linked to “deadheading”, which is the time spent by ride-share drivers in between fares, or while searching for new passengers. Deadheading accounts for forty to sixty percent of ride-sharing drivers actual driving time, which only adds congestion to Austin’s already crowded roadways.

What To Do After an Uber or Lyft Accident

After an Uber/Lyft accident, it’s important that you stay calm and follow this procedure. Once you’ve checked everyone for injuries, call 911. In some states, you are legally required to call the police even if it’s a minor fender-bender. The police officers will document the scene and fill out an accident report. This report will help you with your claims process so make sure you obtain a case ID from the police officer evaluating the scene.

In order to gather full information about the accident, it’s important that you yourself also document the damage done to both cars, preferably by taking pictures of both vehicles and the accident scene. Exchange information with the other driver, such as full name and contact information, insurance company and policy number, driver’s license number, license plate number, and the type of vehicle’s involved in the accident. Also exchange contact information with the Uber/Lyft driver.

If the authorities do not arrive at the scene, it is even more imperative that you obtain as much information at the scene as you can in order to avoid any issues with filing your claim.

After leaving the scene, file an accident report with Uber/Lyft within the application.
